equinox

IN JUST–e.e. cummings

in just–
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it’s
spring

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisble come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

it’s
spring
and
the

goat-footed

balloonMan whistles
far
and
wee

(visions of early spring in shasta county, taken over the years. oh i am so homesick.)

the first day of spring is tomorrow. fern had her 6 mos. birthday yesterday. light and dark is balanced. birds are nesting. plants are blooming. my seeds are sprouting. hearts are awakening. all over the city folks on the street are making eye contact again, stripped of winter coats, rejoicing. life is bittersweet. life is good.

how are you celebrating spring right now?

  1. Love the poem and the photos! I’m going to be working tomorrow so no Spring Solstice party for me. I’ve started a new batch of Iceberg Lettuce and Cantaloupe plants as the first batch didn’t survive the cold front that hit earlier this month. Hopefully I’ll have better luck with this batch as it will be warmer outside when I put them in the ground. I’ve also got a new waterlily plant parked in the swamp area of the backyard. Hopefully it will take advantage of all the water that’s there. Happy Spring Solstice!
