Extra! Extra!

Did you know it’s official? Before you even awoke this morning, the equinox clicked into place with a sonic Ping! Of course, you don’t need a calendar or even me to tell you this. You feel Spring already in your blood, like rising sap.

I had another post planned for you today, from our weekend shenanigans. But Fern and I did something perfectly timed yesterday and it must be shared immediately. Also, I think your face is far too composed. There is not nearly enough squealing escaping involuntarily from you. Let me take care of that.

Fern has been asking to go back to Ardenwood Farm.

First, the bird welcoming committee.

My friend from last time. Fern mustered up the courage to pet her and I gave her snuggles. The chicken, not the kid. The kid gets lots of snuggles too.

Alright, are you ready to squeeeeeeee? Here we go…

Little lamb nuggets.

What the camera doesn’t show you is the quivering their little bodies were doing, still adjusting to this great big world.

Is your face and heart melting? Told you! But wait, there’s more…

Last time we visited the farm, we saw a sign that The Pigs were coming in April. Fern has been asking at least once a week if it’s April yet. Guess who got an early delight?

I didn’t get a good shot of it, but these two boys ran about playing like puppies.

Speaking of playing like puppies, Fern made a friend. It was with her own initiative, asking if the little girl would like to “Go Fishing” with her.

While I swooned over the pigs, the girls romped in the grass, building nests, tossing it about and putting it on their heads.

We stayed all day, watching the ground squirrels collect straw for their underground nests, listening to the blackbirds weaving fertility into the air and feeling startled by the occasional KoooWaa! of a distant peacock. I take delight in all seasons, each with its unique charms…but Spring, dear Spring. I think it’s no secret that you are my favorite.

in Just

in Just-
spring when the world is mud-
luscious the little
lame balloonman

whistles far and wee

and eddieandbill come
running from marbles and
piracies and it’s

when the world is puddle-wonderful

the queer
old balloonman whistles
far and wee
and bettyandisbel come dancing

from hop-scotch and jump-rope and

balloonMan whistles

e.e. cummings

Happy Spring Equinox!!!!

  1. BLARGH, the first three photos made me pee a little. BIRDS! The tom in the first, because duh. The Steller’s Jay, because they’re one of my favorite kinds of jays. And the two hens, because the one on the left looks *exactly* like Minnie!

Spring seems to have brought new growth for Fern — two friends! Such a big girl. :]

    Love you. Happy Equinox!

P.S. umm… pig butts are so durned cute.

  2. far and wee indeed. what a farm, what babes, what children, what a mama! and glorious spring to make it all happen together at once in this beautiful moment in time. yes you made my face melt and laugh out loud. and fern and her friend are perfect contrasts to each other down to the colors of their outfits, so darling. thanks for the brightness this morning. and it’s true, wonderfully true, you’d know it in your bones (even if it IS raining) because spring shakes everything up and enlivens the bushes and trees and bursts and blossoms and blows and explodes. yayyyyyy!!!!

  3. Looks as though Fern is learning how to be a friend ! No worries about that. Great spring pictures which we need to see as the temp has dropped back down to the 20’s, some little crocuses and daffodil leaves so far….

  4. all the animals are just too adorable! that shot of the blue bird is awesome! and speaking of birds, i had a dream the other night that i saw a starling and i got really excited because i was to identify it. i turned around to walk away and you were there and i thanked you for posting about them and we chatted about something i can’t remember 😀 it was good to see you even if it was in my dream!
